Gordon has a dedicated Water Resources Team, providing services in the following areas: stormwater management design (land development applications), stormwater construction inspections, stormwater operation and maintenance, floodplain analysis and permitting, and dam breach analysis and permitting.

This Opportunity

Gordon is seeking a Floodplain and Dam Engineer to join our Water Resources Team within our Chantilly, VA office.  A resume and cover letter are requested.

This individual will have the opportunity to work on floodplain modeling, floodplain permitting, design of crossings of the floodplain, dam modeling, and dam permitting.  This individual will conduct hydrology and hydraulic (H&H) modeling for a variety of project applications across the region.  Floodplain work will include local floodplains and FEMA floodplains.  Dam work will include state regulated dams in Virginia and Maryland.

Technical Design Opportunities

  • Develop H&H models using topographic, GIS, and as-built data
  • Analyze, calibrate, and troubleshoot models
  • Prepare floodplain study, alteration, CLOMR, and LOMR packages
  • Prepare dam breach inundation studies, dam hazard assessments, dam failure analysis
  • Conduct floodplain and dam breach mapping
  • Prepare emergency action plans, emergency drill presentations
  • Design floodplain crossings (vehicular and pedestrian)
  • Design dam rehabilitation and alterations

General Job Responsibilities

  • Production of HEC-RAS models
  • Develop floodplain permitting packages
  • Conduct site visits for floodplain and dam inspections
  • Develop local and state permit applications
  • Prepare technical reports
  • Research regulatory codes, manuals, and standards
  • Manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Meet and coordinate with regulators to address comments and facilitate approval
  • Communicate effectively with team members
  • Perform other duties as required

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of 2+ years with HEC-RAS modeling
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, or similar degree
  • Strong mathematical/analytical skills
  • Strong communication, writing, and organizational skills
  • Strong quality control skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency with ArcMap, or similar

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineer-in-training certification
  • Professional Engineer license
  • Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM)
  • HEC-RAS 2D modeling
  • Proficiency with Autocad
