Gordon has a dedicated Water Resources Team, providing services in the following areas: stormwater management design, floodplain analysis and permitting, dam breach analysis and permitting, municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4) permitting, stormwater construction inspections, and stormwater operation and maintenance program.

This Opportunity

Gordon is seeking a Floodplain & Dam Modeler / Engineer to join our Water Resources Team within our Chantilly, VA office.  

This individual would have the opportunity to work on floodplain modeling and permitting for locally regulated and FEMA regulated floodplains. The floodplain work will include hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) modeling and analysis for land development projects located in local jurisdictions such as, but not limited to, Fairfax County, Loudoun County, Arlington County, Prince William County, Town of Leesburg, and the Town of Herndon.  FEMA floodplain analysis will include Zone A and Zone AE floodplains, with CLOMR and LOMR applications.  Individuals will have the opportunity to conduct site visits to obtain floodplain data, coordinate with floodplain regulators to obtain approval of the applications, work with the civil and water resources designers on the associated land development project, and coordinate with the Client.

This individual can work on dam modeling and permitting for state regulated dams.  The dam work will include hydrologic and hydraulic (H & H) modeling and analysis for dams in the DMV area.  This includes conducting hazard assessment and classification analysis, dam failure analysis, dam inundation mapping, emergency action plan development, emergency services drills, dam inspections, spillway design, new dam design, dam rehabilitation design, and other annual operation and maintenance activities. 

Individuals will have the opportunity to conduct site visits to obtain dam data, coordinate with dam regulators to obtain approval of the applications, and coordinate with the dam owner.

Candidates will have the opportunity to gain design experience in the other Water Resources Team service areas, including stormwater design for a variety of stormwater management facilities to support our land development operations, such as bioretentions, green roofs, permeable pavements, stormwater ponds, manufactured treatment devices, and underground detention facilities. Additionally, candidates will have the opportunity to gain experience in MS4 permitting activities, and stormwater operation and maintenance program development and oversight. Candidates working on a variety of water resources projects will also have an opportunity to gain general civil/land development experience.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop H & H models using GIS data, topographic data, and as-built information
  • Analyze, calibrate, and troubleshoot models
  • Conduct site visits for the collection information for modeling
  • Develop local and state permit applications
  • Prepare technical reports
  • Research regulatory codes, manuals, and standards
  • Manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Communicate effectively with team members
  • Act as a technical mentor to entry-level engineers
  • Perform other duties as required

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, or similar degree
  • A minimum of 2-4 years HEC-RAS modeling experience
  • Strong mathematical/analytical skills
  • Strong communication, writing, and organizational skills
  • Strong quality control skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Autocad
  • Proficiency with ArcMap, or similar
  • Proficiency with H & H modeling software such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, HY-8, Flowmaster, HEC-1, TR-20,

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Engineer-in-Training
  • Professional Engineer license (VA, MD, DC)
  • Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM)
  • Experience in drainage design
  • Experience in design of stormwater quantity and quality control measures
  • Experience training junior level engineers
  • Experience in drainage design, erosion and sediment control design
  • Experience in roadway drainage design and culvert hydraulic analysis
  • BMP Construction Inspections
